{"id":1516,"date":"2017-06-07T15:32:48","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T19:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/slcaottawa.com\/site\/?page_id=1516"},"modified":"2017-06-07T15:32:48","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T19:32:48","slug":"kochchikade-in-ottawa-june-24th-2017","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/slcaottawa.com\/site\/2020-2021\/20162017-2\/kochchikade-in-ottawa-june-24th-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Kochchikade in Ottawa &#8211; June 24th 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May 27th, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Dear Members and friends,<\/p>\n<p>We thank you for your continuous support and participation for community events that has paved way for many networking and social opportunities for Sri Lankans in Ottawa.\u00a0<strong>This is an invitation to ALL to participate and experience a Sri Lankan event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 24<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0<strong>&#8211; Kochchikade in Ottawa, Feast of St. Anthony (Includes a Tri-lingual service)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At St. Isidore Church, 1135 March Road, Kanata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights of the 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0June event will be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tying intention flags<\/li>\n<li>Raising of the Kodi Gaha(flag pole)<\/li>\n<li>Tri-lingual mass<\/li>\n<li>Procession (surola yama)<\/li>\n<li>Blessing of the crowd<\/li>\n<li>Community pot-luck<\/li>\n<li>Karaoke in Tamil, Sinhalese, and English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This history of the Sri Lankan Church feast dates back to many centuries ago when there were\u00a0fewer\u00a0priests present in Sri Lanka. Around the date\u00a0of the significant\u00a0event of a Saint, each church holds a feast to celebrate it and in\u00a0thanksgiving\u00a0for the intercession provided.\u00a0 When one church holds a feast, all the surrounding churches cancels their usual service on Sunday and asks the patrons to\u00a0go to\u00a0the church where there is a tall flag pole (kodi\u00a0gaha) is hoisted. So villagers would look for this and will proceed to attend the service and this is why there is a large presence on the day of. Families would hang a flag on the\u00a0kodi\u00a0gaha\u00a0in seeking\u00a0favors\u00a0(bhara\u00a0wenawa\u00a0as called in\u00a0Sinhala).\u00a0Usually, there are daily services before the feast and the service before the feast is called \u201cVespas\u201d. There are celebrations around the hoisting and lowering of the\u00a0kodi\u00a0gaha. Each village\/area sometimes have different traditions. While there cannot be daily services before the feast, the statue of St. Anthony that will be used for the service will be available for families to do\u00a0Novinas. Please email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:anura@ferdinand.ca\">anura@ferdinand.ca<\/a>\u00a0to coordinate\/book the novena with the statue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The feast of St. Anthony in Sri Lanka draws large crowds of many\u00a0ethnicities\u00a0from around the country who have obtained many\u00a0favors\u00a0by praying to St. Anthony. Thus St. Anthony remains as one of the most popular\u00a0Saints\u00a0among Catholics. \u00a0There are quite a few churches dedicated to St. Anthony in Sri Lanka and one of the most prominent one is at Kochchikade\/Kotahena in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>While in Ottawa, SLCAO will\u00a0liaise\u00a0with Catholics and their friends to bring you an event that will\u00a0symbolize\u00a0the key events of a cultural church feast in Sri Lanka.<br \/>\nPictures of the last year\u2019s event can be found at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/SriLankaCanadaAssociationOfOttawaslcao\/photos\/?tab=album&amp;album_id=1350493348310875\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/SriLankaCanadaAssociationOfOttawaslcao\/photos\/?tab=album&amp;album_id=1350493348310875<\/a><br \/>\n<strong><u>9 Novenas<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nThere will be 9 novenas that will be offered leading to the 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0June event. If your family needs to host a novena, please respond on or before\u00a0the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of June. Novenas will start on the 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of June. Since there is only 9 novena\u2019s, requests will be based on a first come first serve basis and grouped based on proximity. Please contact Anura Ferdinand\u00a0<u><a href=\"mailto:613-700%204849\">613-700 4849<\/a><\/u>\/\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:edward@ferdinand.ca\">edward@ferdinand.ca<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0if you wish to obtain a novena.<\/p>\n<p>The format of the novena:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrival of the statue of St. Anthony<\/li>\n<li>Fr. Lal Pushpadewa Fernando OMI or another priest (yet to be confirmed) will join via Skype to preside\/moderate the novena<\/li>\n<li>The novena will be broadcasted live via\u00a0Kochchikade\u00a0in\u00a0Ottawa\u00a0FaceBook page for others to join in.<\/li>\n<li>All required prayer leaflets will be provided<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Community Potluck Lunch<br \/>\nwe estimate about 150 people to show up. We need help from the community to arrange food for the potluck. Here is the suggested menu.
