First, we start with the Sinhalese Heritage Day in Canada&#8217;s Parliament.   The event is  focused on the following:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><em>Contributions from the Sinhalese to Canada<\/em><\/li><li><em>History of Sinhalese in Sri Lanka<\/em><\/li><li><em>Language<\/em><\/li><li><em>Culture<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Why Sinhalese Heritage Day instead of Sri Lankan Heritage Day?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sri Lanka comprises of many ethnicities.  The <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sinhalese_people\"><em>Sinhalese<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em><g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\"><em>make up<\/em><\/g><em> 74.9% of the population (according to 2012 census) and are concentrated in the densely populated south-west and central parts of the island.<\/em><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demographics_of_Sri_Lanka#cite_note-eth2012-20\"><em>[18]<\/em><\/a><\/sup><em>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lankan_Tamil_people\"><em>Sri Lanka Tamils<\/em><\/a><em>, who live predominantly in the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Province,_Sri_Lanka\"><em>north<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Province,_Sri_Lanka\"><em>east<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;of the island, form the largest minority group at 11.1% (according to the 2012 census) of the population.<\/em><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demographics_of_Sri_Lanka#cite_note-eth2012-20\"><em>[18] <\/em><\/a><\/sup><em>Smaller minorities include the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lankan_Malays\"><em>Malays<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;who descend from Austronesian settlers, the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burgher_people\"><em>Burghers<\/em><\/a><em>, who are descendants of&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_ethnic_groups\"><em>European<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonist\"><em>colonists<\/em><\/a><em>, principally from&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\"><em>Portugal<\/em><\/a><em>, the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netherlands\"><em>Netherlands<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\"><g class=\"gr_ gr_51 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"51\" data-gr-id=\"51\"><em>UK<\/em><\/g><\/a><g class=\"gr_ gr_51 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"51\" data-gr-id=\"51\"><em>and<\/em><\/g><em>&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_people_in_Sri_Lanka\"><em>ethnic Chinese<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;migrants who came to the island in the 18th and 19th centuries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The main objective of the Sri Lanka Canada Association in Ottawa is to seek &#8220;April as a Sri Lankan Heritage Month&#8221; declaration by the Federal Government. Some of the ethnicities already have their heritage recognition done. This is the stepping stone event towards &#8220;April As a Sri Lankan Heritage Month&#8221; declaration. Next year&#8217;s event (2020) will be named &#8220;Sri Lankan Heritage Day&#8221;, of which we will seek the declaration from the government bodies.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Do we need to buy tickets? <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Entrance is free. Since the event is at Canada&#8217;s Parliament, you need to send in your attendance confirmation before the 20th of April.
